Cognitive Emotion Regulation, Anxiety, and Depression Among Early Adolescents
Why This Research?
Adolescence is a turbulent time, and we wanted to explore the mental health challenges adolescents face, focusing on how their ability to regulate emotions influences anxiety and depression.
Findings: Adolescents with healthy emotion regulation strategies were far less likely to experience anxiety or depression. On the flip side, those stuck in rumination or catastrophizing spirals were more vulnerable to emotional distress.
Implications: Schools should prioritize teaching cognitive emotion regulation techniques as part of their mental health curriculum. Early intervention could reduce the risk of anxiety and depression among young adolescents.
How It’s Helpful: By guiding adolescents toward better emotional strategies, we can help shape a generation that’s more emotionally intelligent and resilient.
